St. Gregory's Catholic Primary School, Park Road, Smethwick

Our Pupils

At St Gregory’s we like to give our pupils a say in running the school. Children have the opportunity to be part of several groups, all of whom have an impact on the direction and decisions made by school.

Liturgy Leaders

Liturgy Leaders.

The Liturgy Leaders support the Catholic Life of the school.

This involves participating and organising class and whole school prayer services, leading prayer throughout school and encouraging others to follow Jesus’ example by sharing the weekly Gospel message.

They also demonstrate our school’s motto of ‘Loving and Learning’ to love all those with whom we come into contact as taught to us by Jesus through the Gospels; to learn to the best of our ability using our God given talents.

School Council

The School Council has two representatives per class from Year 2 to Year 6.

To be elected, children have to give a speech in front of their class to tell them why they believe they would be a good school councilor. Every child in the school has a vote in the school council elections.

School Council meetings are held regularly in school. Issues that arise in class are discussed at the meetings. All ideas and suggestions are shared with the Headteacher, staff and the academy committee if needed. Feedback and further action plans are always given at the next School Council meeting.

Eco-Buddies

Our school encourages children from each class to be eco-friendly. Children ensure that all classes recycle used paper and remind staff to turn off light switches and computers. They work very hard at keeping the school litter free, and look after our school environment.

Classes discuss ways to reduce waste and adhere to an eco-charter. Classes are encouraged to take an active role in growing vegetables which can be used by the kitchen cooks. The dinner supervisors play a pivotal role in supporting children’s understanding of growing produce.

From September 2016 nominated children from each class will meet monthly to carry out sustainability and conservation work. They can help to organise regular eco-friendly competitions and events. The school has a strong history of supporting 'The Big Spring Clean', carrying out litter picks at Warley Woods.

Techno Buddies

All classes nominate computing techno buddies. These children have a natural aptitude for computing. They support within their own classroom environments and where necessary across school.

When required the children are able to look after all the computers, laptops and I pads in the ICT Suite and classrooms.

At St Gregory’s learning about computing and new technology permeates all aspects of the curriculum and Stuart, our technician, helps us to sort out any problems.

House Captains and Vice-Captains

House Captains.

All pupils in Key Stage 2 are in one of four houses: St Joseph, St Theresa, St Anthony and St Cecilia.

Children are able to earn points for their house through good work and behaviour. Also during the year there are various inter house competitions involving sport and other activities. Whichever House has the most house points each week earns an extra playtime on a Monday afternoon.

House Captains assume responsibility for their house teams at lunchtimes as the children sit in their house teams.

Buddies

The Year 6 children are given the opportunity to buddy up with a child from our Reception class. This allows year 6 pupils the privilege of playing, nurturing and looking after the Reception children.

The children meet weekly on Friday afternoons and have special celebrations throughout the year. They do a great job and the younger children love to have their role models to look up to!
