The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
Pupil Premium funds are allocated by the central government for pupils who have ever been Free School Meals in the last 6 years (FSM Ever6) or who are 'Looked After Children' (children in care or adopted).
The Government has decided that eligibility for the Pupil Premium will include pupils who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years (FSM Ever6) or who are 'looked After children' (children in care or adopted). A premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.

At St Gregory’s Catholic Primary the pupil premium allocation allows the school to meet the needs of pupils through specific teaching and learning strategies. To ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.
In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.
We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils who are identified as being socially disadvantaged.
St Gregory’s uses the allocation to support the following:
- Providing small group work to focus on overcoming gaps in learning.
- Additional 1-1 support as required.
- Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided by support staff and external agencies.
- To support the FSM pupils rates of progress and close the gap when appropriate.
- To provide resources to target able children on FSM to achieve L3 or 5.
- To support pupils in accessing school trips.
